Blenders and Bowls Austin Review

Last weekend I decided that going forward, I’d like to try one local healthy restaurant here in Austin each week. After checking out a photo that my nutritionist posted on Instagram, I knew that my first selection would be Blenders and Bowls.

Blenders and Bowls started out as a mobile food truck in Austin, Texas. They recently opened a shop on 4th street downtown which I have to imagine will be an awesome location during SXSW.

Blenders and Bowls sells smoothies and “acai bowls”. To be honest I had never heard of an acai bowl before my nutritionist mentioned it on her blog. I always thought of acai as a powder like what I put in my green superfood smoothies.

So I took a book Linda gave me to read and headed downtown. Upon entering the Blenders and Bowls shop, I was greeted and looked at the menu (pic below). I decided on the OG which is the basic acai bowl. Honestly I had absolutely no idea what this acai bowl would taste like.

The server made the acai bowl which included: acai, strawberry, banana and honey (I went light on the honey). The small size was $7.

I grabbed a seat (they have about 6 tables) and just went for it! I have to say that I enjoyed it very much – has a taste that is similar to a very creamy soft serve ice cream. I am sure it is a perfect treat for a summer day. Honestly with this acai bowl tasting so good, I wonder why anyone eats ice cream!

I sat in the Blenders and Bowls shop for about an hour reading the book and there was a nice flow of foot traffic.

I think it would be great if they offered a smaller size as the small was huge – very similar to a large sundae at an ice cream shop. I also imagine a smaller size might get more people to try it.

I am very glad I gave this acai bowl a try. I have no idea if it should be considered a treat or if it can be a regular addition to the lineup but I enjoyed every spoonful and will definitely be going back to Blenders and Bowls!

Thanks Allen for the lovely blog post! At Blenders and Bowls we like to think of our açaí bowls as a healthy and refreshing meal replacement rather than ice cream. All of our bowls are completely fruit based and dairy free with no added sugar. Since you ordered your bowl without granola I can definitely understand the ice cream comparison :) I’ll be sure to thank Linda for sending you in! Don’t be a stranger!
