Nuun Hydration Review

nuun hydrationOne of the things I know I don’t do a great job with is drinking water. I drink a lot but could certainly drink more and I know that more water = more weight loss. As I work to get ready for my first 5k in November, my fitness trainer Ashli has been pushing me to drink more water throughout the day.

She recommended a product called “Nuun” in her training plan for the 5k. Ashli noted, “Taking in extra water without replacing the electrolytes you’re sweating out can be very dangerous. Because some drinks like Gatorade would be counter-productive for your weight loss goals, I suggest drinking Nuun. It’s available at HEB (Texas supermarket chain) as a tablet you drop in your water bottle and has no sugar and only 8 calories/tablet.”

The Nuun vials were $6 at HEB and at the running store I went to this past weekend, they were $8. There are 12 discs in each vial. There are a large number of choices – some of the vials were hard to figure out which flavor was inside. One of my suggestions to the Nuun team is to make a combo vial that has 8 different flavors as this would give us some variety and also allow us to try 8 flavors at one time. I purchased the orange “active hydration” variety – Ashli said her favorite is the fruit punch.

I think the taste is very similar to a Gatorade but without the sugar. I definitely think it will take me a while to get used to drinking the Nuun but the orange I purchased is pleasant to drink. Somehow the water has a bit of fizz after the tablet does its work.

The disc reminds me a bit of a large necco wafer. The wafer is to be added to 16 ounces of water and then shake. I found it extremely hard to get the wafer into the Dasani bottle I had – the wafer was slightly too large and I had to force it in and let’s just say that water got all over :) I am sure it would fit ok inside an Evian bottle as it has a large mouth. And yes, I know I should be using my own re-usable water bottle – this was just a test.

Amazon has better pricing on the various Nuun varieties but I suggest purchasing one vial locally first to make sure you like the flavor before buying a larger package on Amazon.

If you plan on purchasing Nuun – I would suggest you read their website to know which version is the one you need. There are 3 versions and each one has a different set of vitamins and minerals and electrolytes. The display in the store makes it seem like it’s all the same product in different flavors.
