Savory Spice Shop Austin Review

I want to get back to reviewing a local restaurant or food supplier every week or so. You can read review of Blenders and Bowls from July. I have totally fallen in love with B&B – their staff is always friendly and the acai bowls are amazing – I know I’ve said it 100 times but it really tastes like a better version of soft serve ice cream and the bowl is super healthy!

As I work on more healthy recipes, I want to keep trying new spices — mainly in the grilled chicken I eat multiple times a week. I enjoy the grilled chicken plain but even with a pinch of Himalayan sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, I’ve found that the chicken tastes even better!

I saw a deal on Living Social for a shop here in Austin, Texas called “Savory Spice Shop”. It’s located on 6th street about a 10 minute walk from Whole Foods. Whole Foods has a large loose spice department but I figured that someone at the Savory Spice Shop could give me guidance on which spices might work best for chicken, fish, veggies, etc. Somehow I got an ad on Facebook for the spice shop and they offered me a free $5 so now I definitely have to give it a try!

I went into the cute little shop and was greeted by Emily. For the next 25 minutes, Emily took me on a culinary tour of spices. My thoughts were confirmed – Emily was able to help me pick out some spices that will work great for my chicken, fish and veggies! What I liked most is that Emily listened to my requests of no white sugar, low to no salt, etc.

They encourage you to try everything and try I did! They have what seems like about 300 blends and individual spices and they sell them in any amount you like. I decided to buy 6 blends at 1/2 ounce and then go back once I decide which ones I like best. To give you an idea, each of the blends below were approximately $1.50.

I bought the following blends:

  • Cantanzaro Herbs – garlic, lemon peel, marjoram, basil, Mediterranean thyme, rosemary and oregano
  • Cherry Creek Seasoning – salt, lemon peel, peppercorn blend, red bell pepper, dill weed, cracked dill seed, onion
  • Pyramid Peak Lemon Pepper – salt, lemon peel, ground black, white, green and red peppercorn, onion
  • Hidden Cove Lemon Garlic – lemon peel, garlic, salt, ginger, onion, allspice, parsley, white pepper and spices
  • Native Texan BBQ Rub – honey powder, black pepper, garlic, onion, chiles, mustard, coriander, Mexican oregano and celery
  • Colorado Plateau Citrus Pepper – black pepper, garlic, orange peel, lemon peel, onion and smoked sweet paprika

Overall I was very pleased with the trip down 6th street to Savory Spice Shop and I tonight will be the first test of the spices – I think we will start with the Colorado Plateau Citrus Pepper!
