Think of the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants and most of all…think of the children! This is a perfect after-school snack because it takes a minute to make and will give the kids an energy boost to do their homework and exercise.

Raw Apple Snack Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1-2 apples – select a sweet apple like Fuji or Gala (I used Fuji)
- 1 medium orange
- 1 medium lemon
Prep:
- Juice lemon and orange into a small bowl
- Slice the apple into thin slices (see image below)
- Place slices into juice bowl and make sure the juice is all over the apple slices
- Place bowl in fridge for 30minutes-2 hours
Remove from fridge, serve and enjoy! Warning: contents are addicting!
Optional: you can use a green apple in place of one of the other apples to give the plate some contrast for your guests. The green apples (e.g. granny smith) will make the snack even more tart and should explode of awesomeness when you and your guests enjoy!
Related: If you don’t want to cutup the apple with a knife, this Apple Slicer will do it in one step and it also removes the core.
KIDS LOVE THE APPLE SNACK! Check out my niece enjoying the apple snack on my visit to Charlotte last weekend.
This sounds amazing Allen – who knew that a simple orange and lemon could make an apple become even tastier?!?
Thanks Jenny! So glad you like it – the amount of people who have shared and sent me emails or comments about this recipe has been crazy! It’s such an awesome snack – you will be addicted
This is so simple, but I bet it is amazing! And so healthy and no extra sugar! I am excited to try this!
Oh it is amazing, I just this hour at 2 apples
If you get addicted, please do not hold me liable!
I think I am going to take this to work with me this week!
I’ve done this a couple of times and I’ve got to say I’d rather just eat a plain ole’ apple. This is nothing to be excited about really, it tastes like an apple with lemon juice.
If you have a fairly sweet apple, it’s very good in lime juice, too!
Love that idea – thanks Joy!
I love apples and this way of making them looks great Allen. I wish I would have thought of this recipe!
I think I’ll be trying this… my kids already love sliced apples.. but why not an extra kick?
You know what else is quite tasty? Sliced bananas soaked in lime juice.
omg MUST TRY banana in lime juice!
and i bet your kids will love it Christine – thanks so much for stopping by
Try sprinkling cocoa powder on sliced bananas. Yummmm
CAN.NOT.WAIT. to try these!! My new favorite snack right now is dipping apple slices into honey yogurt and then into homemade granola. I can’t stop myself. I fear this may increase my apple intake…
ooh your recipe sounds good too! and yes, once you try mine, you will be hooked like crack
So simple yet so satisfying. I just love these kinds of recipies.
How long does it stay fresh and does it change the apple flavor? Thanks
I have left it in the fridge a day and it was great – trust me, once you eat a slice, you will eat the entire apple
It does change the taste a bit – it makes it even better I promise!
The citric acid keeps the apple from turning brown.
that’s correct! side benefits rock
I’ve been seeing this all over the place, glad to finally see the recipe. I’m going to try it now!
Love A Simply Raw Life – and the photos on Instagram too.
This is a great way to enjoy apples! I love new ways of eating healthy. I recently started eating healthier and working out and it has really made a difference in my waist line. If you plan out a healthy diet it will help you stay on track.
looks yummy.
I bet this keeps the apples from browning too. Brilliant!
Yes Summer – it does – that’s why it is perfect for a lunchbox.
Oh, so if I do this the night before and drain to put in the lunch box it won’t brown? Hoping for a yes!
Yep Stefanie! This is one the best parts of the apple snack
You can do it at night or pop it into a lunchbox in the AM and it won’t brown – I’ve done it at least all day with no problems. The lemon juice keeps the apple from browning.
Yay
Tried last night with a Fuji, didn’t really taste that much different. I soaked for a few hours and If nothing else kept the apples from going brown:)
Thanks Ryan for your comment – uhm – did you use enough juice? It definitely tastes different – but yea the non-browning is a HUGE side benefit! I suggest trying it again sometime
Can you use lemon juice and orange juice instead? I don’t have a juicer.
Hi Leigha – you don’t need a juicer – just your hands
– just squeeze both fruits into the bowl. I didn’t use a juicer for this recipe nor on the times I have made it for friends and family. go for it!
Try rolling the lemon and orange in the palm of your hand on the counter before juicing. You get more juice from it.
A mandolin slicer comes in handy!
Ambrosia apples would be perfect for this and I would like to try lime and orange. I love lime!
Thanks for the ideas Kristy!
A ten second zap in the microwave will make the lemon and orange easier to juice.
I used 3 tbsp of Real Lemon lemon juice and 1/3 cup of Orange juice. I’ll let you know how it turns out.
Hey Allen – Can you tell me the secret to getting the slices so thin and even?
Hi Dianna – I’ve had SO many emails and comments on Pinterest asking the same question – I will be doing a video this weekend on how I do it – I will send you an email once the video is ready. It’s funny, I made this recipe for my sister and niece this past weekend and my sister said “you got about 48,000 slices from that one apple!”
Thanks so much for stopping by – I appreciate it.
I would like to know how to slice the apples also. Please let me know how to see the video.
Thank you,
Jane
Hi Jane – my post on how to slice the apple is here:
http://www.letstalkfitness.com/how-to-slice-an-apple
Following for apple slicing tips!
have you ever reused the juice? I can’t drink it because of my acid reflux and I’d hate to throw it down the drain.
Hi Jessica – usually there is only a small bit of juice left – if there is a lot, I just toss another apple in
I have heard from others that they just drink the juice.
adding cinnamon would be awesome!
yum-o!
Where did you get the cute little white containor? I can’t wait to do this for my snack tomorrow — I eat an apple every day while my students are eating their snacks — my cholesteral level has gone done without increasing any exercise.
Hi Sunshine – just be careful – if your students get a piece, there might be trouble – it is very addicting
The white dish is from Ikea I think – it’s not like a tupperware or portable container. When I take the apple snack to bowling or to friends, I put it into a small rubbermaid clear plastic container. Hope that helps – thanks so much for stopping by! And congrats on your lower cholesterol level – my friend keeps saying that an apple a day keeps the doctor a way
Love IKEA — will check it out when I go downstate before Christmas!
Cool – I was impressed with the design of some of their plates and bowls. I spent way too much on stuff there for my food photography – so if you hang around, you will see more different dishes in the future
I’d love to know how you cut the apple too……if this would lower my cholesterol I would be so happy! How can I find out when video is posted?
Hi Alicia – you can see how I cut the apple here – How to Slice an Apple Thinly – it’s super easy!
Hi, Allen! I actually really love this post and I can’t wait to make some!! I work at a preschool and when we have apple slices the chef soaks them in orange juice in order to keep them from browning while uncovered on the table during lunch. The first time I tasted them it was ADDICTING but I never could figure out if it was just like sunny d or actually orange juice, this post cleared that up for me! Awesome!
Hi Hanah – thanks for stopping by. It is totally addicting, right? Now you need to try it with both the orange AND the lemon juice – then you will see the real addicting power lol
And don’t use sunny d – just regular orange and lemon juice.
i loved this, just started WW and this is a great snack ! It was a little tart do you think I used to much Lemon!!
Hi Barbara – so glad you liked it! The tart level will definitely depend on your ratio of orange to lemon. I like it really tart so I go 2/3 lemon and 1/3 orange. You might try 2/3 orange and 1/3 lemon next time. Play with it.
And best of luck and success on Weight Watchers!
I have never wanted an apple so much in my life!
I am sure there is a 24 hour grocery in your area
lol.
Everyday I use lemon or lime juice for just about everything. I had never thought of adding it, along with orange juice, to apples. I cannot WAIT to try this! My mouth is watering already. Thank you for sharing!
Cool – stop back and let me know how you like my apple snack – I am sure you will love it
Another quick and delicious snack- slice apple and sprinkle with dry jello. I use the sugar free black cherry. Taste just like a candy apple but fat free and sugar free!!!
Wow – that’s a really interesting idea Amanda – thanks for sharing.
Just made these, but I didn’t have an orange, I used a grapefruit instead, and added a little sugar. Hopefully they taste good, I can’t wait to try it!
Wow Brooke – please stop back after you try it with the grapefruit! Would love to hear how you like it
And maybe try stevia instead of sugar next time – I promise it will still be sweet
Just tried it with the grapefruit and it was so good! This is definitely going to be a regular snack for me, especially when I’m at school.
Thanks for the advice, and the recipe!
Yay! Thanks so much for stopping back – I will totally be giving your grapefruit modification a try next week
A fruit salad made with orange, grapefruit, apples and banana and lemon juice has become one of my favorite things. Found the grapefruit at Sam’s, came home and just threw everything I had in it. A very yumo treat!
That sounds really tasty Gloria! I will have to try this next week.
I love this tip. Weird question: Do you eat the orange? Just thinking if all the juice is gone, is the orange still good?
Hi Jennifer – great question. What I do is just juice the orange until the orange is dead and then I will toss it. I am sure you could eat it too! I know some people who have emailed me said they make it with a bottled orange juice – I think the fresh is better but the bottle would work too.
This looks sooo totally AMAZING! Can’t wait to try! Thx so much for the recipe Allen!
Thanks Avery – let me know if you have any questions – can’t wait to hear if you like it
I just tried this apple snack today, it was awesome. I even had enough juice leftover to soak another apple that i ended up dharing with my 18 month old. He kept saying more mama, more!! Thank you for sharing. This taste like it should be bad for you and its not.
So glad you and your baby liked it. I agree with you about it – I was a guy who could eat 3-4 twix packs or a whole cake in one sitting and yet now the apple snack is what i want. It makes me feel so great when I hear kids are eating it – wish I had it when I was a kid! Thanks for stopping by – you rock!
I don’t like lemons so I do this with pineapple juice. I often fix 3 or 4 apples at a time for my family. We have kept them in the fridge up to 3 days and they were still deicious and still crisp.
fantastic idea leasa – i need to try this next time
What a great idea! Just made this today for myself and my 21 month old. We both loved it. I used the leftover juice and a couple of apple slices in my water bottle and its amazing too!
Thanks Miranda – you made my day! – so glad your child likes it too – that really is my one mission – to help kids learn about healthy snacks and foods – something I never did as a kid.
Your idea for the leftover juice is brilliant – totally will be doing this!!
I took one bite and thought, eh- these are okay… But then it happened… The flavors exploded in my mouth! Amazing and addicting!!! Thanks! Yumm!
that is so awesome Leah – glad you like the apple snack and thanks for stopping by!
I have been using orange and lemon juices in fruit salad for years. They make all fresh fruits taste better! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Tommie! It’s so interesting to hear how people use the juices – what a great idea to do it in fruit salad.
My husband made a really great snack with pineapple, red grapes, green grapes, and lime juice. It is really delicious…This sounds really awesome too…I’m trying it tomorrow!
Hi Brittany – wow your hb’s snack sounds great! Please shoot me an email or reply after you try my apple snack
We are, currently, snowed in! I saw this, had all the ingredients and made them right away. Can’t believe how good they are. Used apples for one batch and apple pears for another. Yummy! I can feel my body thanking me for the extra nutrition! hee hee
That is so cool Rose – thanks so much for sharing – yep, I couldn’t believe how good they are either but I am addicted
I wish we had snow here – can you send me a container?

I have the apples in the fridge right now! Hurry up time!
Haha that’s awesome Celia! I always eat a piece straight away – too hard to resist
I love Grapples but they are so expensive. They are whole apples you can buy that are infused with grape juice. If you look at them closely you can see many, many tiny puncture marks where they have infused the juice. I’m going to try covering some apple slices with grape juice & see how it turns out. Thanks for the recipe & beautiful picture.
neat idea – never heard of grapples – but yea you could easily put grape juice on the apple too – and thanks for the kind words on my photo!
If you cut the apple in half, you can use a melon baller to scoop out the core. Then, slice it using a mandolin. Your slices will all be the same thickness. And it’s faster.
Thanks for the idea Ginny!
i just saw your apple slices post on pinterest and immediately ran into the kitchen to make it. it’s in the fridge now. thanks!
Awesome Deborrah! I hope you like it
Can you use orange juice from a carton (I always buy the real stuff not from concentrate) and also Real Lemon lemon juice? Instead of sqeezing your own?
Hi Donna – yes, a few people have told me that they use a bottle for the orange and the real lemon as you note – i think the key is just make sure the juice is cold. Give it a try
Found this recipe on Pinterest and tried it as an after school snack. My 2 kids at 4 apples and wanted more. Now I don’t have to care if they eat their veggies with dinner. Thanks!! (I shared this on my FB page. Hope you get lots of traffic from it!)
So awesome Allison! I am SO happy that your children like the apple snack!
I have 7 year old twins and they LOVE fruit! My daughter has a 10 am snack break at school and everyday she takes an apple but always complained of them turning brown. So now I know how to do it!!! Thank you so much. P.s I got lucky with my kids, everytime I ask them what they want for snacks at the store, they want green peppers, cucumbers, tiny tomatoes, and fruit. I buy cookies and they never get touched! I feel accomplished by this. I too am TRYIN to lose weight….I keep falling off the train, but i WILL get where I need to be. Kinda hard with no support and the “healthy food” costing a small fortune! Keep up the good work, and keep these yummy posts coming!
Hey Shannon – just wait until she tries the apple snack! And yes, you do have support – join our facebook page and know that we are all supporting you. Shoot me an email if you want help saving money on the healthy food – I am a deal hunter and can try to help you save some money at your local shops.
Awesome, i’ll have to do that! Thanks
I bought the ingredients to make these right now they sound yummy! But bo the apples get Brown with the juice? Can I make them and keep them overnight? Also what what is the Facebook page?
Cool! You will love it
You can make them and leave them overnight, I generally can’t resist eating them all immediately
When you sit behind a desk all day it is really easy to snack on bad food out of boredom. This is perfect. I can can snack all day out of boredom if I want and don’t feel like I have ruined an entire day of good eating. Yay for this recipe!
Yep – thanks so much for stopping by Melynda – and the best part is the lemon juice will keep the apple from browning so you can eat a piece as you like
I’m going to be completely honest: I saw this on Pinterest and thought that it had to be overrated. There’s no way an apple with some orange and lemon juice could be that amazing. And now I’m here to admit, I was totally wrong. This snack is delicious! And it’s so nice that the juice keeps the apple from browning. I’ve been taking one to work with me every day. I squeeze the juice into a ziploc baggie the night before and then slice up the apple in the morning. It’s perfect for breakfast and even stays until lunch. Oh, and I think it’s a must to slice the apple as you do…it tastes better that way
Yum! I didn’t have lemons in the house but I had cara cara oranges, which I find to be a little more tart than “regular” ones anyways. I sliced the apple with a mandolin like one other commenter suggested and they were beautiful! It took two oranges to cover my slices and I left it over night–delicious! I also scraped all the pulp and mashed it up with about 1tsp of honey, and stuck it in an ice cube tray to freeze. After I ate the slices today I froze the remaining juice, too. All in all, I think I have ten pulp or juice cubes, and they’ll probably be great in water, green tea, and smoothies! I don’t drink soda but if you do I imagine it would taste good in lemon-lime soda or grapefruit soda, as well.
Thanks for the great snack idea!
Yay Jacquie!! Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for the wonderful and easy snack solution, Allen! I haven’t tried it yet, but with so many positive comments, I’m excited to give it a go. I’ve got a case of mandarin oranges that don’t seem to be disappearing fast enough so I’m going to try those out in place of regular OJ.
You were a Godsend because I have just gotten into Pintrest and I am looking for more ways to get apples into our ( mine and my husbands diet or eating). I think anyone would like these. I cannot wait to get home and try them. I am so happy for you that you are trying to eat and live healthy. God bless your efforts.
We had your apples tonight and loved them. I’ve done the lemon before but adding the orange just makes it yummier. Thanks!

Saw many comments about getting enough juice. Toss your lemon and orange In the microwave for approx 15 seconds- and it will make them super juicy. If you put them in at the same time.. You may need to increase it from 15 seconds. Anyway.. It works like a charm. I apologize if this is a duplicate suggestion-
can’t wait to try this recipe!
Cool idea – thanks!
Just put my first batch in the fridge. I also slice up cucumbers and baby carrots cover them with fresh lime juice and a shake of salt. Soooo good but very addicting.
Hey Allen. Is the juice only good for 1 apple or can it be used for multiple apples?
Hi Rachel – I find that the juice of an orange and a lemon works for two apples. If you mean if you can save the juice for another day, I think that should be fine but you will probably want to eat another apple immediately
Oh my goodness! I have three children and a husband that absolutely LOVED this recipe! (Myself included lol) Im always looking for “kid-friendly” snacks or ideas and I give you an A+++ on these amazing apple slices. The tart orange taste and the added crispness of the apples is just incredible!! Would highly recommend to any and everybody! Thanks for the awesome apple idea!
So glad you and your family liked my apple snack Christine! It’s perfect for a lunchbox too because the lemon keeps the apple from browning. You really made my day
