Juicing vs. Blending – Which is Better?

Which is better for health and nutrition…. green juice or green smoothies?

One of the questions I am often asked by Smoothie a Day newsletter subscribers is, “which is better – juicing or blending?” Meaning is it better to drink a green juice or drink a green smoothie?

This exact question was one of the first things I asked after starting with green smoothies. I mean heck, why would anyone want to take away part of the fruit which is what a juice is? Why wouldn’t you want the whole fruit like in a smoothie?

At the end of the day I think you need both! But here is the simple difference: juicing removes the fiber, blending keeps the fiber as part of the beverage.

Since juices have no fiber, they don’t require any real work by your digestive system to be processed by your body to get all the nutrient goodness. So basically the juice goes right to work cleansing, detoxing and fixing. Juicing also allows you to get more fruits and vegetables into your system. For example, would you want to eat an entire bunch of kale, a whole cucumber, 2 apples and 2 lemons in one sitting? Probably not but it is easy to drink a green lemonade with those ingredients each day just like I have been doing for a couple of months now.

Blending, in this case smoothies, keeps the fiber in the beverage which is important for your colon and for other body functions. Fiber is also an important regulator for blood sugar. For me I find that the smoothies give me great energy and a top notch start to the day. If you are new to green smoothies, check out my starter guide.

I start each day with a green smoothie and, assuming I am home, have a green juice each evening. I have found this plan has really helped me lose weight and feel great all day.
