Beets Cafe Austin Review

Beets Austin Raw Foods CafeLast week I had lunch with Melanie at Beets Cafe in Austin, Texas. Here’s a review of my experience at Beets.

I arrived a few minutes before Melanie and had a look inside. The decor is modern and pleasant and it feels like a diner with the counter for take-away. There is a dessert case near the counter which had some very appetizing raw desserts. We were greeted straight away and sat down and started to review the menu. I had already checked out the menu online just to make sure they had something I might be interested in. You see just over a year ago you couldn’t have paid me cash to go to Beets Cafe as there was no way I would ever consider eating a raw foods meal.

The server came over and welcomed us to Beets Cafe. She went over the specials. I decided to go way, way, way out on a limb and order the “Asian Style Noodle Salad”. I figured if I am going to go, I have to go all the way :) Here’s what is included in this salad, “napa, red and green cabbages, kelp noodles, sea vegetables, daikon radish, bok choy, broccoli, carrot, scallions, cilantro, tossed with Sweet n’ Spicy Miso Dressing, garnished with gomasio”.  I remember sitting in my first nutrition session when we talked about eating vegetables and I was thinking, “wtf”. Now I just ate kelp noodles, sea veg and something called gomasio! This is why I keep saying, if I can change, anyone can change.

Melanie had the ELT which includes, “sprouted almond sunflower flatbread, spread with a creamy cashew dijonaise, layered with crispy spiced eggplant “bacon”, lettuce, tomato, avocado, and high-vibe sprouts, served with crispy veggie chips and kraut.” She shared her veggie chips with me – I thought they tasted good although they were a bit salty. She liked the ELT so much she got one to go for dinner.

It’s funny because next door to Beets Cafe is a Subway fast food restaurant. I smelled the bread from Subway and it took me back to all the subs I used to eat. And yet I enjoyed my Asian Salad more than I ever did a sub from Subway.

I definitely see myself going back to Beets Cafe so I can continue trying new raw food dishes.
