Raw Vegan Chocolate Mousse Recipe

How about a very simple to make, tasty raw vegan chocolate mousse that will satisfy your cravings for a sweet treat?

My fitness trainer Ashli posted on her Facebook page a very simple recipe for a chocolate mousse. I hadn’t tried avocado so I figured this would be a great opportunity to give the fruit a try.  Many of the smoothies I’ve shared on the Smoothie a Day newsletter use avocado and it appears to be a great replacement for banana in a smoothie as both fruits create a creamy texture in a smoothie.

What’s great about this sweet treat is that it is amazingly healthy, completely raw, vegan, vegetarian, good for you, good for your friends and family and I am sure the little ones would eat this up like chocolate pudding. I remember growing up eating Kozy Shack chocolate pudding and this raw vegan chocolate mousse recipe tastes very similar!

Please share this wonderful recipe:

I modified Ashli’s recipe a bit to remove the white sugar and the the chocolate powder and replace them with powdered stevia and cacao powder respectively. I also used water instead of the almond milk as I generally stay away from nuts. You could easily use soy milk or any other non-dairy milk you prefer. Both recipes are listed below.

I topped the mousse with a dusting of matcha green tea for a kick of energy but you could also top this dessert recipe with cacao nibs, goji berries for some crunch or chia seeds.

Ashli’s recipe includes the following ingredients: 2 pitted and peeled avocados, 2 tbsp of good cocoa powder, 1/8 tsp raw sugar, and 2-3 tbsp of almond milk. Blend until creamy.

this looks really good! how much is 3 packets of stevia? i have a box with stevia powder and would like to know ca how much 3packets are :) )

Hi Brit-Elin – sorry about that, I am still a newbie at this whole recipe posting thing :) The packets I used say they are 1 gram – so just use that as your measurement from the box you have. And if you aren’t sure, just start with a bit, blend, stick in a spoon, taste, adjust, repeat until you find the right sweetness level. :) Thanks!

Unfortunately, I don’t follow a raw vegan diet but I do appreciate healthy food. Cacao is easy to come by in Peru so I look forward to trying this. Thanks!

Hi Vespa – I don’t follow a raw vegan diet either – but I try to incorporate as much raw as I can and everyone will love this dessert :) Cacao is really expensive here so it’s great to learn it’s easy to get in Peru!

How long is this good for?
and is stevia sweeter than splenda? I used 3 splenda sachets and felt like it needed more..
    thanks, and great recipe!

Hi Barbara – I generally think anytime you make a raw dessert, you will want to enjoy it in the same (or less) time that the fruit or veg would have been good for. Does that explanation make sense? I think this mousse is best consumed the same day or next day (store in fridge). Stevia is natural while (sorry to say this) splenda is artificial so I would say to stay away from Splenda. Stevia is absolutely wonderful :) You could try buying the packets in the store – the popular brand is Truvia (just make sure you get the kind that is ONLY stevia) or you can order it from amazon (i like the nunaturals brand). Hope that helps and I hope you can find the right level of sweetness!

Also, wanted to add that Stevia is significantly sweeter than regular sugar. Using too much causes a slight bitter taste. But since I’ve switched using to Stevia, I’ve gotten the hang of how much I need after some experimentation. I haven’t touched regular old refined sugar since.

Barbra…Stevia is very sweet and you only need a small amount..The difference is Splenda is man made and not at all good for you ! Steevia is derived from a plant…a better choice :)

Hi Melissa – sorry that you had some trouble with the recipe – can you tell me what blender you have and what size the container is for the blender?

My family has recently begun eating a no processed, healthier diet and we just started adding in smoothies this past weekend. I look forward to your recipes!

PS I made the avocado chocolate mousse tonight and my no fruit and veggie son could not taste the avocado and gobbled it up!
