The Rest Stop

I remember driving back and forth to college in upstate New York. I had a car load of friends and during every trip we would stop at a rest area on the thruway. We always went into the Bob’s Big Boy for a meal or snack. Years later I drove from Atlanta to Charlotte to visit my sister and I always stopped at exit 75 in South Carolina. That exit had a long john silvers if it was lunch time or for breakfast was Burger King. It was a routine for me to always stop at that exit both going to and coming from.

Today I drove down to San Antonio to visit a close friend who is working locally for the weekend. Every exit on the two-hour drive had some fast food restaurant. I decided to stop and get a water and some gas about half way – the exit I picked had the Pilot rest stop seen below. Attached to the rest stop was a mcdonalds. It was felt so good to go into the store, fill up with water, fill up the car and get back on the highway. Not one french fry, not on chicken mcnugget, not one orange drink.

I decided to stop at the Costco in San Antonio because they are doing a “roadshow” for the Blendtec blenders this weekend. Wow I want one of these! I watched the demo for about 45 minutes. The salesman made a smoothie with a ton of items including grapes, strawberries, kale, spinach, celery, orange, apple, mango and he added some cinnamon. He poured some in a cup for me and I didn’t even hesitate – just drank the entire 3-4oz of smoothie. It was very tasty – the cinnamon definitely was strong but I enjoyed it.

I can’t wait to drive back and ignore the 100s of fast food places on the journey home.
