My Superfoods Dealer

Today was my latest session with my nutritionist. It was another good session – the last couple of sessions we’ve spent a good portion looking back over the last year and good gosh it is amazing how far I’ve come.

She was nice enough to bring me some samples of a variety of “superfoods” – she’s my superfood dealer. She explained each one of the superfoods in detail during our session – it was great learning. Wikipedia notes that the term superfoods is basically a marketing term which I’d say I agree with. But I define superfoods as “food item you add to a meal or smoothie to enhance the health benefits”.

Below is a photo of each of the superfoods she gave me samples of with the health benefits (from the manufacturer’s websites):

  • Spirulina – I started taking spirulina tablets last week and I swear I feel like they are doing something – I just feel even more energetic – maybe it’s just the overall health improving but I will keep taking the tablets. She gave me some of the spirulina powder to try adding to the morning green smoothies. Spirulina is rich in protein, vitamins, minerals, and carotenoids, antioxidants that can help protect cells from damage.
  • Maca – adaptogen, amino acids, minerals, plant sterols and phytonutrients
  • Chia – these are the same seeds that are in the Chia Pet – who knew that growing hair on Obama’s head could help you get in shape?! Chia is sprouted, high in omega fatty acids and has some dietary fiber
  • Acai – this one seems to always be in the media and I see it in a lot of teas. Antioxidants, polyphenols, omega fatty acids, trace minerals, and essential amino acids
  • Colostrum – I think she said this one is a balancer – like it comes in and just levels you out. This site explains the health benefits of colostrum – looks like it helps with everything – it’s the kitchen sink of superfoods.

I can’t wait to try adding these things to my smoothies and kick the smoothies up a notch!
