Basic Green Smoothie Recipe

Here are my most simple basic green smoothie recipes which is perfect for beginners. After I posted my Green Smoothie Starter Guide a couple of weeks ago, one of the most popular questions I have received by email is, “hey Allen, what’s a simple green smoothie recipe to start with?” Well here are two recipes to get you started! And if you want a good variety of green smoothie recipes, check out my Smoothie a Day newsletter where I send a healthy smoothie each weekday.

Green smoothies are great for weight loss…I am living proof of that. When I started with green smoothies, I started with the basic green smoothie recipes below. I think it is important to start simple – similar to riding a bike. Start simple – then once you get to find your favorites, experiment with adding more “stuff” to the smoothies – from superfoods to green powders. My morning smoothies have lots of stuff in them these days but if I started with all of the things I use today, I am not sure I would have kept going because it may have seemed overwhelming. So start with a basic green smoothie recipe and then build upon it. As always if you have questions, shoot me an email at (allen-at-letstalkfitness-dot-com). YOU CAN DO THIS!

I’m looking forward to trying your smoothie recipes. I drink a pitcher of Mean Green (Phil Staples’ recipe from Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead nearly every day. I bought a Ninja instead of a juicer because I wanted the fiber as well, so I make a slurry of the ingredients with extra water and drink it beginning at about 10 am and finish about 5 pm. It’s a lot of fiber, but it tastes great and I feel great drinking it. Plus, it’s really yummy. You should see my complexion!

So glad to hear the green drinks are working for you! It sounds like you are already making a smoothie – to me if it has the fiber, it’s a smoothie or without the fiber, it is a juice. At least that is my definition for now lol. I totally agree on the complexion – I feel like I look better every day! Green smoothies rock my world.

Stumbled upon your website on Pinterest, and got hooked! I had always wondered what the green smoothies had in them. Pretty goood! Thanks for sharing.

Hi Dana – welcome :) Yea, green smoothies are really simple – some fruit, some greens, blend. That’s the basic green smoothie recipe!

I noticed both your basic green smoothie recipes call for banana. Is it a big deal to leave it out? To me when I add a banana, it overpowers everything else and bananas aren’t my favorite thing (although my dogs LOVE them).

Hi Lisa – you can absolutely leave it out – how much banana did you add? I never find that the banana takes over the other fruit in taste so I am curious. You could try adding some avocado instead too. The best part about smoothies is that you can just put in whatever you like! It’s not like baking where measurements have to be precise. Sometimes I add a bit more banana, sometimes less. Hope that helps – please let me know if you need more guidance – I am happy to help or connect you to someone who can help.
