Since I am now eating salads (ok it’s only day 3 but we are going!), I want to figure out what is the best deal for buying the items in the salad. I like the idea of the bagged spring mix salads because they are already made and ready-to-go. I assume the cheapest way is to buy one of each item in the salad mix and make the mix yourself. My fear with the “homemade” option is that I will spend a lot because I won’t eat all of the items quick enough.
For reference, the local supermarket this week has their own brand non-Organic spring mix bagged salad for $1.50 for 6 oz bag. This is the best value but it is important to note that this package is not organic.
The photos below (click to enlarge) are all products I found today at my local Whole Foods. I think it is odd that the clamshell packages were 2x more expensive than the same thing in a bag. Why do they even offer the salad in this huge plastic container?
Here is the price breakdown:
- HEB non-organic spring mix – $0.25/ounce (on sale, regular price is about $0.33/ounce)
- Earthbound Farm organic spring mix bag – $0.4975/ounce
- Earthbound Farm organic spring mix clamshell – $0.798/ounce
- Organic Girl organic spring mix clamshell – $0.798/ounce
The packages from HEB also had a slightly longer shelf life than the organic packages at WF.
This is Earthbound Farms Organic Spring Mix – price is $1.99 for 4 oz. bag:
This is also from Earthbound Farms – but this is a clamshell package – price is $3.99 for 5 oz. clamshell:
This one is from Organic Girl – Baby Spring Mix – price is $3.99 for 5 oz clamshell:
