Was Gloria Gaynor Singing About a Man or About Sugar?

This morning I was listening to the radio and a song started playing – I always assumed that Gloria was singing about some bad man in her life with her song, “I Will Survive”. I replayed the song several times and then I realized for me she is singing about all the sugary crap I used to eat. Read the lyrics and then watch the video below and you tell me if the song isn’t perfect for us as we kick the bad foods we used to eat to the curb!

The sugary crap keeps trying to come back but I am not that person anymore. And I spent oh so many nights
just feeling sorry for myself. I’ve got all my life to life and all my love to give to foods that give me love back. Oh go now, walk out the door you sugary crap, you aren’t welcome here anymore! You sing it Gloria!

I Will Survive Lyrics
At first I was afraid I was petrified.
Kept thinking I could never live without you by my side.
But then I spent so many nights
Thinking how you did me wrong.
And I grew strong!
And I learned how to get along!
So now you’re back from out of space.
I just walked in to find you here with that sad look upon your face.

I should have changed that stupid lock!
I should have made you leave your key!
If I had known for just one second you’d be back to bother me.

Go on now, go, walk out that door!
Just turn around now‚
cause you’re not welcome any more.
Weren’t you the one who tried to hurt (crush) me with goodbye?

Did I crumble
Did I lay down and die
Oh no, not I! I will survive!
Oh and as long as I know how to love I know I stay alive.
I’ve got all my life to live, I’ve got all my love to give.
And I’ll survive!
I will survive! Hey, hey.

It took all the strength I had not to fall apart.
Kept tryin’ hard to mend the pieces of my broken heart!
And I spent oh so many nights
just feeling sorry for myself. I used to cry!
But now I hold my head up high.
And you see me somebody new!
I’m not that chained-up little person still in love with you.

And so you feel like droppin’ in,
and just expect me to be free,
now I’m saving all my loving for someone who is loving me!
