How a New Phone Changed My Workout and Stress Level

HTC Evo 4g LTEI’ve been using the same phone for a number of years – a very old Windows Mobile device that basically was able to handle email only. Every year I would go to conferences and see tons of new mobile devices but would never make the leap to buy one. I had considered several devices including the iPhone a few times over the past 2-3 years but each time it just seemed like all I really needed was the ability to get and send emails.

Just about 10 days ago I finally decided to take the plunge and enter the 21st century and I am now using the Sprint HTC Evo 4G LTE. And let me say that of all the phones I’ve tried, this is the most amazing device I’ve ever used. And even more amazing is how I realized that in just 10 days, it has changed my workout patterns AND my “work” stress level.

I have an iPod Touch that I had been using for workouts and it is a great device too but it has no mobile connection and the WiFi in the gym rarely ever works so I am stuck listening to the same songs over and over and over again. It gets boring quick. This new phone has all of the Internet music apps and so I can listen to any type of music at any time.

And I’ve noticed that I don’t have a desire to get off the treadmill (or other machine) as quickly as in the past. In fact the other day I was on the tread for 1 hour! Almost 4 miles! Considering where I was a year ago, I think this is pretty freaking amazing. And all of the other days I find myself going longer and harder. All because I am totally connected so I can check mail, Facebook, Twitter, our internal network, and now I’ve been playing with Instagram as well.

The other thing I’ve noticed is that this phone has allowed me to be more relaxed outside of the office and/or home. Since this phone can do almost all of what a desktop pc can, it’s easy for me to relax when I go out for lunch with a friend or even just go shopping. I can respond to any crisis if one should arise without needing to rush back to the office.

Today I sat by the pool sipping a cocktail for an hour and was able to handle email, check my social accounts, etc, etc. It was awesome.

I can’t wait to see how else this new phone changes other parts of my life. If it only continues to help me exercise for a longer time and allows me to enjoy more time out of the office, it will be well worth the investment.
