Wow This Is Healthy Popcorn?

While eating dinner tonight, I had the TV on Home Shopping Network (HSN) as they were presenting an hour of “Healthy & Delicious Foods”. The first presenter was from the b’drizzled company. The person went on and on about how healthy this snack is – how popcorn is a whole grain and how important whole grains are. She also said that the popcorn is popped in very, very healthy coconut oil. You can see the product here.

So after eating I went to the HSN website to check out the popcorn details. I bought a special bowl for popping popcorn and I don’t use any oil or butter. I very rarely ate the popcorn – I think it was during my “I need something to keep me occupied so I don’t think about a muffin” stage.

Here are the ingredients in this “very very healthy” popcorn, “Ingredients: Popcorn, Sugar, Partially Hydrogenated Palm Kernal and Cottonseed Oils, Non Fat Dry Milk, Cocoa, Milk, Glyceryl Lacto-Esters of Fatty Acids, Soy, Lecithin add as an Emulsifier, Coconut Oil, Salt, Artificial Color/or Flavor Added.”

I am guessing that most of the ingredients are for the toppings they put on the popcorn. A 1-oz serving (who ever eats that small an amount?) contains:

  • 7 grams total fat – or 10% of the RDA – HALF of the calories come from fat
  • 4.2 grams saturated fat – or 22% of the RDA
  • 11 grams of sugar (probably the bad white table kind)

Once again this is why I say that reading labels is one of the best things I’ve learned. If we just listened to the show host, we might just believe that this is a healthy snack.

Tonight, instead of this popcorn, I will have an organic fuji apple that I purchased today.
