The One Race I’ve Wanted To Enter for Ten Years

This past week might have been the best week of my life and the best part is the “getting healthy” part which is crazy for me to say considering the other things that happened during the week. Never have I put my health ahead of everything else but it seems like the more I work to take care of my health, the more other areas seem to be doing better and better. Let’s hope this trend continues!

There is one race that I’ve wanted to enter for ten years now. Can you guess which race I am referring to? It’s the Amazing Race – the reality tv show on CBS. I don’t watch many reality shows but the Amazing Race is the one I’ve stuck with since the beginning. Tonight is the season finale and as I watch the show, more than ever I think I want to be on the show.

I’ve always wanted to be on the Amazing Race but there were two things holding me back: weight and food. And now I am working on one of them (weight) and feel semi-comfortable with the other (food). Actually the truth is that these same two things have held me back from having lots of great experiences throughout my life.

While I don’t love flying, one of the reasons I have always just watched the show was because I didn’t think I would be comfortable flying around the world in one coach seat. Soon that won’t be an issue.

The other issue, which frankly was the bigger issue, was dealing with food. As I’ve written about before, when I have traveled both domestically and internationally, I’ve made sure that a McDonalds or something similar was in range of the hotels I stayed at. Isn’t that the most horrible way to travel?

And watching the television show for years, I always said to myself that there is no way I could do this reality show because how would I deal with all the food in the different countries and remote locations the teams travel to? What if there was a food competition with something other than chicken mcnuggets and fries? Tonight there was a sushi food challenge – this is a perfect example of why I never thought I could apply to be on the show – I wouldn’t want to cost my partner a chance at the win when I couldn’t do the food challenges.

Yet today I watch the show with confidence that both issues that always held me back will no longer hold me back.

Even if I never make it to the tv show, I can’t wait to travel internationally again. I look forward to visiting friends and not have to always eat burgers or worry about where a McDonalds is. As long as I can find a salad and some fruits, I know I will be ok.

Of course to apply for the Amazing Race I have to find a partner – so let the search begin!
