Dunkin Donuts Lemonade Coolatta

During my two years of graduate school, I found myself stopping at Dunkin Donuts on the walk from work to school. Just after I began graduate school at Georgia State, the Dunkin Donuts opened. Before DD opened, most evenings I would go to class without eating and would generally stop at the diner on the way home for some dinner. Once the DD opened, I found myself bringing a donut to class. And during the hot Atlanta summers, I would pick up a lemonade Coolatta drink as well.

Tonight Dunkin Donuts had a commercial on TV and it made me think back to my time in grad school and I wondered just what was in the Lemonade Coolatta that I drank so often (I went to university 4 nights a week). Today I couldn’t even imagine drinking one – I remember that they gave me such an intense sugar rush. Today I would much rather have a True Lemon lemonade which is made with Stevia and really is quite tasty – I need to try making it into an ice slushie sometime like the Coolatta is made.

Apparently DD stopped selling the Lemonade Coolatta in 2009 but they sell several other varieties. It seems like the closest one is the Strawberry Coolatta. The ingredients list is: Frozen Neutral Base [Water, Neutral Base (Sugar, Glucose, Fructose, Silicon Dioxide, Malic Acid, Xanthan Gum)], Strawberry Coolatta Concentrate (Strawberry Puree, Water, Sugar, Natural and Artificial Flavor, Lime Juice Concentrate, Lemon Juice Concentrate, Red 40).

The crazy part is the sugar at 114 grams of sugar in the drink! And the drink alone has 470 calories.

To give you an idea, the American Heart Association recommends 37 grams a day for males, 25 grams for females. And the recommends 32 grams a day.

Reading labels makes me realize why I am fat. I keep saying it but reading labels is the biggest thing my nutritionist has taught me so far. When I read the labels, it sure makes me not want those things anymore. There’s no label on the spinach leaf, the tomato or the strawberry because there is no need for the label.
