Campari Tomatoes – O.M.G.

Campari TomatoesShort version…Campari tomatoes are simply awesome.

When I started eating vegetables on a regular basis, the first veggies I ate were cucumber (usually english cucumber) and tomato. And yes, I know a tomato is technically classified as a fruit!

Check out my dinner from back in June – a grilled chicken breast, sliced tomato and sliced cucumber. It’s amazing how far I have come in terms of the veggies I eat. When I started drinking green juice every day, I basically stopped eating cucumber because there is a lot of cucumber in the juices I drink. And since the two were married in my mind, the tomato disappeared from my daily raw food intake.

When I did eat tomatoes, I found myself buying the Roma variety most often although to me all of tomatoes I had tried tasted basically the same. I most often went with the Roma variety due to the size and lower volume of seeds.

While watching one of John’s videos, he mentioned that his favorite type of tomato is the Campari variety. I didn’t think anything of it – again, to me all of the tomatoes I tried had tasted the same. A couple of weeks ago I was shopping at a store called Sprouts (really nice organic produce section with excellent prices) and I noticed they had a package of Campari tomatoes on sale. Alright I thought, John said they are good, they are on sale, let’s give them a go.

Oh dear. Amazing is not a strong enough word to explain how amazing these tomatoes are. They are SO SWEET. They have a clean taste and are just amazing. Wikipedia explains, “Campari is a type of cocktail tomato, noted for its juiciness, high sugar level, low acidity, and lack of mealiness. Camparis are deep red and larger than a cherry tomato, but smaller and rounder than a plum tomato.” I’d say that a Campari tomato is about 2x bigger than a grape/cherry tomato and completely round (see my image on the top right).

These tomatoes are so sweet and easy-to-eat that I could eat a pound as a snack. I have re-added tomatoes into my raw food intake and can’t wait to try juicing a package to see how the juice tastes – something tells me that the juice will be super sweet and easy to drink.

If you don’t like tomatoes or if your kids don’t care for tomatoes, I urge you to give Campari tomatoes a try. From what I’ve heard, Costco has the best prices on the Campari tomatoes – here in Austin the prices have ranged from $1.50-$3 for a one-pound package.

Here is what the package generally looks like:
