I’ve always liked cantaloupe. I didn’t eat it very much but I remember my mother buying the fruit and putting it on the kitchen table after dinner with little toothpicks in some of the chunks. Lately I’ve been buying the cantaloupe chunks at Whole Foods – obviously the most expensive choice when it comes to cantaloupe.
Today I decided to buy a whole cantaloupe and see how long it would take for me to cut it up and how large a volume I would get versus the cutup chunks. FYI, Whole Foods didn’t have any organic cantaloupe – the produce clerk told me they would have some later in the summer.
I would say it took about 8-9 minutes to cutup the entire melon (the produce clerk said this was a huge melon) and I wound up with just over three pounds of cantaloupe chunks! This means I paid ~$1.25 per pound for the cantaloupe chunks vs. nearly $5/pound for the cutup chunks. I will certainly be buying the whole melon going forward!
As you can see in the image below, I put half of the cutup melon chunks into a freezer bag — apparently the cantaloupe is ok to freeze. I will definitely be trying it in a smoothie this week as well!
